About Air Compressor Oils
Air Compressor Oils
Air compressor oil lubricates moving components, carries heat away from critical surfaces, and helps control wear, deposits, and corrosion. Unlike general-purpose motor oil, compressor lubricants are formulated for the temperatures, pressures, moisture, and extended operating cycles found in compressed-air equipment.
Rotary screw compressors rely on lubricant to protect bearings and the airend while also cooling the compression process and helping seal internal clearances. Rotary vane compressors likewise need a fluid matched to the vane assembly, operating temperature, and manufacturer specification. Piston compressor oils are formulated for reciprocating components such as crankshafts, connecting rods, bearings, cylinders, and piston rings. Because these compressor types operate differently, their lubricants are not automatically interchangeable.
Always use the viscosity and lubricant type specified for the compressor model and operating conditions. Mixing incompatible fluids or using the wrong formulation can shorten oil life, create deposits, affect separator performance, and contribute to equipment damage. Oil condition and service intervals should be monitored according to the compressor manufacturer’s recommendations.
